Research Partnerships

The University of Pittsburgh is one of the largest research universities in the nation with more than $1 billion in annual research expenditures. It is ranked 3rd among U.S. universities for competitive grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

In FY 2022, over 400 companies collaborated with Pitt faculty on more than 700 research projects of all types, including clinical trials, basic science, and highly focused translational activities.

Successful partnerships are rooted in a deep understanding of a potential partner’s needs. We work closely with businesses to understand their external innovation and research priorities, and then align those needs to faculty experts and specialized resources available at Pitt. Research partnerships are crafted which leverage the combined capabilities of the partner and University to create significant mutual value.

Executing successful research partnerships is a team sport. Pitt’s Office of Industry and Economic Partnerships facilitates the partnering process for industry, serving as a liaison to academic units, technology licensing, and contract administration. For major partnerships, a formal alliance management relationship is often established.
